The objective of the programme is to ensure that the UN system is fit for purpose to support implementation of the 2030 Agenda, ensuring delivery of priorities as outlined in the Department’s Single Departmental Plan strategic objectives, and underpinned by the UK Aid Strategy and UK National Security Strategy of: strengthening global peace, security and governance; strengthening resilience and response to crises; promoting global prosperity; tackling extreme poverty and helping the world’s most vulnerable.
DFID will provide £30.3m from July 2014 to March 2020 to help multinational and local businesses manage the social and environmental implications of their actions, and be accountable for the consequences for poor workers and communities who may be affected by them. This programme will engage with partners across a range of responsible business approaches, such as voluntary standards, company reporting, and human rights and gender impact assessments, in order to improve enterprises’ social and environmental risk management, and their accountability, transparency and openness to participation. In particular, the programme will work with the private sector to implement a mix of influencing and international coordination initiatives which tackle the root causes of modern slavery and child labour and support its victims.
The Safeguarding Innovation and Engagement Programme Fund will provide targeted resources over the next two years with a focus on: (1) providing responsive expert advice and technical assistance; (2) piloting and implementing approaches to raise safeguarding standards; and (3) engaging and convening partners to drive up standards and deliver culture change across the international aid sector.
