UK Aid Match 2013–2016: giving the public a say in how a portion of the aid budget is spent

UK Aid Match allows the UK public to have a say in how an element of the aid budget is spent. DFID will match fund, pound for pound, public donations to appeals made by selected not-for-profit organisations, enabling them to increase their poverty reduction and development work in DFID priority countries.

Excluded People's Rights in Bangladesh

To promote rights and equality for 1.64 million people in Bangladesh who are at the highest risk of being excluded, including poor women and girls, people with disabilities, ethnic and religious minorities, ‘Dalits’ (untouchables), children working in vulnerable situations (including modern slavery) and youth. The programme will increasingly focus on social cohesion. The partner supports a network of organisations to defend and enhance poor, minorities and other marginalised people’s rights and enabling them to access to assets, public services (e.g. health, education) and economic opportunities. The programme also works with local level service providers to help them meet their responsibilities and assist communities to monitor their performance. Where opportunities arise, the programme will contribute to the development of policies and laws that uphold the rights of the poor and excluded groups in society.

Deepening Democracy in Nigeria 2 (DDIN2)

To strengthen the democratic character of Nigerian political processes and outcomes by providing support to key electoral bodies, other relevant arms of government (such as the Legistaure) and civil society organisations. Credible elections, an efficient legislature and the scrutiny of government performance by an informed society will motivate government to perform better and be more responsive to the needs of citizens.

Integrated Programme for Strengthening Security and Justice

To achieve better security and access to justice for at least 1.85 million people, including over 1 million women and girls.

Accelerating Action Against Child Marriage

DFID is providing up to £39m over a period of 5 years (2015-2020) to support global efforts for accelerating action to end child marriage. The UK has been at the forefront of international efforts to end child marriage. This programme is aligned with UK’s national interest - we cannot end global poverty, realise lasting peace or prosperity without empowering girls and women. When a girl marries later, she is more likely to stay in school longer and have better access to information, support and resources to earn a decent income. The intended outcome of the programme is adolescent girls supported to make healthier, safer and more empowered life transitions including on marriage choices and childbearing. The intended impact is: Reduction in prevalence of child marriage.

Land Governance for Economic Development

DFID will pursue actions globally to improve land rights protection to: help ensure women and men enjoy legally recognised, secure property and tenure rights. To Improve information and knowledgeto facilitate the provision of clear, transparent land related information and knowledge, enabling rights to be identified, understood and protected. To improve private sector investment through the development and rollout of a standardized investment risk assessment methodology and implementation of best practice in land governance.

Deepening Democracy Programme

Consolidating Democracy in Pakistan (CDIP) Programme.

AAWAZ II: Inclusion, Accountability and Preventing Modern Slavery

This programme will work to strengthen voice and accountability for women's rights and young people. It will address the root causes of disadvantage, discrimination and exclusion working with communities, civil society, government institutions and the UN. It will work to shift damaging social norms, attitudes and behaviours at the individual, institutional and societal levels to improve gender equality and youth participation.

Health: Toward Ending Female Genital Mutilation/Cutting in Africa and Beyond

This programme combines targeted action with communities in 17 countries with support for legislative and policy change and effective implementation of laws and policies. It includes a robust international research component to build the global evidence base on the most effective strategies to end FGM/C. It will work with others to support a movement within countries and globally to raise awareness and understanding of FGM/C and build support for efforts to end the practice. This programme aims to work towards ending the practice in one generation.
