Corridors for Growth

To increase Tanzania’s infrastructure for trade in three ways (i) Co-financing the Dar Port expansion together with the World Bank and Tanzania Port Authority will double port capacity and enable Tanzania’s entire trade volume to increase by two thirds. (ii) Project preparation funding for six more major regional transport projects are expected to catalyse up to £600m of development finance incorporating climate resilent design. (iii) Launching a new approach to Public-Private Partnerships will improve infrastructure in municipal areas and build capacity for larger PPP’s in the future.The programme is expected to reduce the costs of doing business in Tanzania, contributing to growth, more jobs and lower poverty. The short-term beneficiaries will be users such as traders, logistics providers and public citizens. International business including from the UK will benefit from better access to trade.In the medium to long run employment is expected to increase from indirect effects.

The Ethiopia Investment Advisory Facility (EIAF) Phase II Programme

UK-India Global Innovation Programme

This programme will accelerate delivery of the Sustainable Development Goals in South Asia and Africa by supporting transfer of inclusive Indian innovations, benefitting poor people, with a special focus on women and the disabled. The new programme will operate in specific countries in Africa - Ethiopia, Tanzania, Kenya, Ghana, Nigeria, Rwanda, Uganda and South Asia - Nepal, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Afghanistan. It will increase agricultural productivity and food security; address pressing health needs; provide potable water; clean energy; and technology for financial services; by prioritising these sectors. It will do this by deploying a more ambitious and comprehensive range of financial instruments compared to our existing programme, including investment and lending, to fund the development, transfer and scale up of innovations by Indian public, private sector and civil society organisations.

UK Trade Partnerships Programme

The UK Trade Partnerships Programme (UKTP) aims to increase trade with developing countries that have preferential trading arrangements with the UK. From 2018 to 2023 this has been with Economic Partnership Agreements (EPA) partner countries in Africa, the Caribbean and Pacific. From FY23/24, all developing countries with preferential trading arrangements with the UK have been eligible for support i.e. EPA countries and countries eligible to import goods to the UK using the Developing Countries Trading Scheme (DCTS). The programme delivers: (i) technical assistance to support the implementation of the new UK EPAs and the DCTS; (ii) communications campaigns to increase awareness amongst businesses in EPA and DCTS countries about the preferential access offered under these arrangements and how to use these preferences; and (iii) targeted support, e.g. with logistics or export marketing, to promote exports from EPA and DCTS countries to the UK.

Private Enterprise Programme Zambia Phase II

To create investment in Zambia by building the capacity of micro, small and medium sized enterprises. The programme will aim to systematically transform the finance and investment environment for SMSEs in Zambia, by helping companies with potential to grow and become the engine of job creation in the economy. In addition, the programme will also provide independent technical advice and assistance to Zambian government bodies and private sector organisations engaged in projects that harness the potential of Zambia’s infrastructure, cities and towns to act as drivers for economic growth and job creation. Furthermore, the programme will support trade facilitation initiatives that will help reduce time spent at the Nakonde boarder post. The programme will create jobs at scale, including for women, disabled, and rural communities with high levels of poverty. SMSEs supported by the programme will help to improve nutrition outcomes and improve climate resilience of smallholder farmers.

Malawi Trade and Investment Programme

MTIP aims to stimulate a step change in Malawi’s growth by promoting higher value export sectors, cutting time and costs of trade and logistics, and raising international and domestic investment in new exports. Underpinning this will be a focused effort to improve the business enabling environment. Higher economic growth is expected to translate into sustained poverty reduction, creating new jobs and income generating opportunities and much needed revenue to fund the public services needed for a fast-growing population. Specifically, programme aims include reducing the costs of trade for Malawi by 10% and converting over 5,000 hectares of land to more productive high value export crops.

Manufacturing Africa - Foreign Direct Investment

Manufacturing Africa helps drive the inclusive economic transformation needed to create jobs for the future and set countries on a trajectory out of poverty. It is expected to generate £1.2 billion of new Foreign Direct Investment in manufacturing sectors in Africa. It will do this by working with African Governments and international companies to facilitate new investments, such as by developing the business case for firms to undertake investment, or by supporting their negotiations with Government, and by addressing sector specific barriers preventing those particular investments from taking place. MA also aims to reduce carbon emissions from manufacturing through thought leadership as well as delivering technical assistance and supporting investments that facilitate climate change mitigation and or adaptation.

Digital Access Programme

Increased digital inclusion in the programme countries will form the basis for more thriving digital ecosystems that generate high-skilled jobs, opportunities for local digital entrepreneurship focused on country-specific development challenges, as well as potential partnerships with international and UK business aimed at mutual prosperity. The Digital Access programme will also focus on learning about sustainable models and enablers for digital inclusion. The learnings will be shared with key stakeholders and other partner countries, thereby amplifying the impact of the programme.

Good Governance Fund (Phase 3) Eastern Neighbourhood: Supporting Governance and Economic Reform

The Good Governance Fund Phase 3 will deliver demand-led support to governance reforms that allow open societies and economies to flourish. The Good Governance Fund will focus on improving democratic and economic governance, primarily through strategically targeted technical assistance. The Good Governance Fund programme will deliver interventions on a flexible basis, based on identified needs and/or requests from government counterparts or civil society in beneficiary countries (Armenia, Georgia and Moldova) in support of governance and economic reforms. This will support delivery and seek to prevent/reverse democratic backsliding. The Good Governance Fund is part of an integrated portfolio of programmes operating in the Eastern Europe and Central Asia Directorate region and supports the delivery of four National Security Council strategies and the Integrated Review.

Poorest States Inclusive Growth Programme
